The unparallel and unearthly beauty of Thanjavur Paintings (Tanjore Paintings) is known by all. This painting illustrates the scene of Lord Rama’s Coronation (Sri Rama Pattabhishekam) in traditional Thanjavur style. Here we see Rama in the glory of his Durbar with Sita, his consort and Hanuman, his ardent devotee. The lower panel depicts the Ten Avatars of Lord Vishnu.
The ornamental detailing, vivid colouring and the eloquent and aesthetic composition make this painting an awesome sight. Glittering gold foil and semi-precious stones are used to embellish the painting. The Art involves specifically treated canvas and natural colours.
In Pondicherry, the fading art of Tanjore paintings was given a strong impetus by a UNESCO collaborative. This encouraged artists and contributed to a large presence of these paintings in the region.
Raj Nivas, Puducherry in its endeavours to promote local artists has added to its collection of Tanjore Paintings. Several forms of Vishnu, Krishna, Mahalakshmi and Saraswati add to the aesthetics and history of the walls of this Heritage Building. We invite you to join us during the daily Visitors Hour (Monday to Saturday from 12 pm to 1.30 pm) for a voyage of discovery of such several artifacts!
