Sarva Mangala Mangalye


Goddess Shakti is believed to be the Mother of all earthly beings.  It is said that she protects the entire universe with her benevolence and grace.  A shloka that hails the Divine Mother is “Sarva Mangala Mangalye…” – verse that it taken from the Devi Mahatmyam, also known as Devi Saptashati.  By reciting the verses, one worships the Goddess by describing Her as the essence of nobility and the embodiment of everything auspicious.  One offers salutations and surrenders to the Goddess who is believed to fulfill the wishes of Her devotees.

Ya Devi Mahatmyam or the Durga Saptashati consists of 700 verses in praise of Goddess Durga.  Each of these verses describes the glory and magnificence of the Divine Mother.  “Ya Devi Sarva Bhuteshu……” is among the most widely known shlokas from the Saptashati.  The verses of the shloka beautifully hail Goddess Durga who dwells in devotees’ hearts and minds in various forms.  As one recites the sholka, one pays tribute to the Goddess who takes the form of power and peace and worships Her as the Mother of all earthly beings.

Lord Krishna, as one of several incarnations of Lord Vishnu, imparted innumerable valuable lessons to his devotees.  It is said that the Lord nobly urges devotees to take refuge in Him and disregard all worldly troubles.  The verse “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya….” quite simply offers salutations to Lord Krishna as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.  However, the puranas quote that many rishis believed theses verses to be among the most powerful Vishnu Mantra.

Goddess Saraswati, the divine consort of Lord Brahma, is believed to be the custodian of art and education.  Seated gracefully on a lotus flower, She is believed to be one who bestows intellect and knowledge.  She holds the musical instrument Veena which is said to be a symbol of various forms of art.  “Saraswati Namastubhyam” is a prayer that pays tribute to Her glory.  While reciting the shloka, one offers obeisance to the Goddess and seeks knowledge and success in all endeavours.  The verses of the shloka describe Her as the one who showers blessings and grants all the wishes of devotees.

Goddess Mahalakshmi, the divine consort of Lord Vishnu, is believed to be the one who bestows wealth and prosperity.  She is worshipped as the Mother of all earthly beings.  One of the shlokas that described here divine grace and benevolence is the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam.  Believed to have been composed by Indira, the King of the Devas, the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam is a set of eight (8) verses that hail the power, virtues and beauty of Goddess Mahalakshmi.  Be reciting the verses, we seek the blessings of the Goddess and praise here as the one who grants all boons and destroys suffering.
